I literally woke up from a nap about 20 minutes ago and my Twitter was in Fall-Out-Boy-mania (no pun intended) and covered in purple. This excitement is well deserved considering the band just dropped a new song, an album release date, and Fall 2017 tour dates. The band hasn’t released new music since 2015 so the drop of Young And Menace must be a godsend for lots of FOB fans out there. The new album M A N I A is scheduled to drop September 15, 2017.
I’ve had a rocky start with all recently released Fall Out Boy singles since they started straying away from their pop-punk roots. I hated Uma Therman, I hated My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark, and I really hated Centuries the first few listens. Due to this pattern I didn’t go in expecting to like this new song, but it turns out it’s a jam…except for the chorus.
The song starts out with Patrick Stump’s sultry warning of
We’ve gone way too fast for way too long/And we were never supposed to make it half this far
Then we get some nice drums and falsetto, all while this kid is eating dinner served by his llama/goat/furry parents. The first verse closes with the lines
Oops I, did it again, I forgot what I was losing my mind about/Oh, I only wrote this down to make you press rewind/And send a message that I was young and a menace
The words “young and a menace” are sang in a way that sounds like Stump is about to break into this amazing chorus…but then dubstep happens. I really, really hate dubstep. I’m not too “with it” in the dubstep/electronica music scene, but the chorus sounds like it’s straight out of 2010. The awful screeching ends and it’s back to Stump’s slightly-synthesized vocals, great lyrics, and guitar.
Overall this song amused my ears a lot more than I thought it would. The music video is also a cool and artistic way to cover the serious topic of domestic violence (the parents aren’t actually furry-enthusiasts, the kid just sees them as animalistic monsters I’m guessing). I can also appreciate that they’re adding new levels of depth and experimenting with their music, even if it’s not my thing.
Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

i lost all hope for fall out boy after this track. I agree that this 2010 dubstep slant would have been more digestible in 2010.

For me, the song seems overproduced =( I really liked the verse and then this dubstep chorus just killed me. At the beginning, it was like: – okay… something refreshing…
..but not for that long! Like they wanted more dynamics. Well… they got it but… is it worth it? It just doesn’t feel right =(
